Empowerment International (EI) has been working in Nicaragua since 2003. They have provided a community-based holistic educational program to children and their families in two extremely impoverished communities in Nicaragua. Their objectives are to instill the value of education in the families and the entire community by removing the physical and emotional barriers that could hinder regular school attendance. This is done through daily home visits where parents are encouraged to promote school attendance and are trained on how to enhance their children’s education. EI offers much needed school supplies, uniforms, tuition, transportation and tutoring. It also provides access to a small library and research center, enrichment activities, and counselling both individually and in groups.
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
In October 2009, Isa Mundo representatives had the privilege of visiting EI located near Granada, Nicaragua and witnessed first hand the positive influence EI and its staff are having in the lives of families and communities. It was during this visit that the idea of building the second Isa Mundo Education Centre (IMEC) was brought forward. Isa Mundo and EI continued the discussion to make this project a reality including looking for funders to support the creation of IMEC.
In May 2011, a small IMEC was created with funding from the Global Education Fund (McEwen College) and with the support of Staples Store #254. Isa Mundo was able to purchase Acer netbooks for students accessing EI’s facility. In addition, Isa Mundo was able to work in partnership with Soccer Without Borders in order to deliver the netbooks directly to EI. An Isa Mundo volunteer traveled to Nicaragua to complete the initial set up of the IMEC and offered an orientation on basic computer and internet application skills.
Isa Mundo is committed to work with EI to improve students’ access to technological and learning tools in order to progress their education.
